Event Overview:

As a former prisoner of war in Ukraine, Shaun Pinner gained a unique perspective on captivity, resilience, and recovery. Having undergone SERE training—Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape—in the military prior to his capture, he understands the physical and psychological challenges faced during capture. This experience also provided him with insights into self-induced pressures—such as feelings of powerlessness, fear, and isolation—and how these can be mitigated through mental resilience and strategic coping mechanisms. Shaun will share how mental toughness, preparation, and awareness can help individuals manage trauma and injuries, both physical and emotional, sustained during captivity. His goal is to provide a broader understanding of trauma recovery, resilience-building, and the importance of mental health support in extreme situations, much retailed with stories from his own experience. Shaun hopes to foster compassion and awareness among mental health professionals to better support individuals facing adversity, whether in military or civilian settings.
