Event Overview:

To provide a comprehensive understanding of the multifactorial nature of drug addiction, equipping mental health professionals with insights into the biological, psychological, social, spiritual and environmental factors that contribute to the development and persistence of addictive behaviours. This presentation aims to improve understanding of the underlying motivations and emotional drivers behind addictive behaviours by integrating firsthand accounts of those with lived experience. Participants will gain insights into fostering greater empathy and more effective intervention strategies. The session emphasizes the importance of compassionate, person-centred approaches and highlights how understanding the ‘why’ behind addiction can lead to more meaningful support and recovery pathways. This lecture will engage reflection on current practices and will equip attendees with valuable perspectives to enhance their clinical work, ultimately improving outcomes for individuals struggling with addiction.


Meet Your Presenter:

Doug Kukura has been sober since mid 2018, living proof of the transformative power of recovery. Over the past 8 years, he has not only rebuilt and is now thriving in his own life, but has dedicated himself to helping others do the same. Through one -on-one mentorship and guiding men through the 12 steps, he has played a meaningful role in the recovery journeys of many. His approach combines lived experience with a deep understanding of spiritual principles, accountability, and community- helping others move from surviving addiction to thriving in sobriety.

Prof. Oxford York is a certified Integrative Mental Health practitioner, Clinical Trauma Professional, Sex-informed therapist, and an Advanced Grief Counselling Specialist. He has worked for over 26 years in critical care, prehospital care, and operating room settings prior to returning to school to complement his knowledge on the constituents of holistic health, natural medicinal practices and healing.
